Tiruvottiyur
is in the suburbs
of Madras. There
is a Lingam installed
which is supposed
to be Pattinather.
Pattinather was
a great saivite
saint. His name
was Tiruvengadar.
It was after he
renounced all earthly
possessions and
became a sanyasi,
that he came to
be known as Pattinather.
His initiation to
this world was done
by none other than
his son Marudavanar
who was Siva himself.
There are many astonishing
stories attached
to Pattinather.
During his visit
to all holy places
he came to Tiruvottiyur.
Here he worshipped
Lord Siva and composed
many songs. He used
to play with the
urchins there. His
favorite game was
to get into a pit
at one place and
get out of another.
One day he asked
the boys to place
a huge vessel over
him. But even after
a long time he did
not come out. The
boys opened the
vessel but found
a lingam instead.
A temple has been
constructed over
this lingam at Tiruvottiyur
and is worshipped
by one and all especially
by the Saivites.
Tiruvottiyur is
part of the suburbs
of Chennai and is
easily accessible
by road from the
city.
