 Thiruvanmiyur
temple originated
during the chola
rule It is a shrine
of Siva, with the
presiding goddesses
as Chokkanayaki
and Tripurasundari.
The legend of the
temple goes like
this. Sage Vasista
had requested Indra
to give him Kamadhenu
in order to conduct
his worship of Lord
Vishwanatha. One
day while grazing,
kamadhenu went to
the hill and Vasistha’s
pooja was affected.
He then cursed the
cow to become a
wild cow and wander
about. The legend
has it that this
cow gained spiritual
revelation when
it stepped foot
on Tiruvanmiyur.
It found a linga
on the bush and
daily poured milk
offerings to it.
The cow even killed
a lion that was
straying past him.
King Sadayur on
hearing this built
a temple here which
has come to be known
as Thruvanmiyur
temple. Lord Siva
took the curse away
from Kamadhenu and
the linga is bathed
by Kamadhenu’s
milk everyday. Hence
the lord here is
known as palvannar.
The temple is very
much in the city.
It is extremely
accessible by road.
