Tiruvallur
is a taluk in Chengalpettu
district. Tiruvallur
is famous for its
vaishnavite temple
of Lord Veeraraghava
and Goddess Kanakavalli
or Vasumati.
 According
to the legend Salihotran,
the son of sage
Purupunyar was engaged
in a penance in
Tiruvallur, It was
a strict penance
without food and
water for a year
to get the darshan
of the Lord. After
one year Salihotran
made some Prasadam
and divided it into
three parts, one
for the Lord, the
other for a guest
and third for himself.
Lord Vishnu in the
form of an old Brahmin
appeared and ate
his share of food
meant for the guest.
But he was angry
still and was offered
the share of food
meant for Salihotran.
The second year
the same thing happened.
The old man requested
for a place to lie
down. Salihotran
said, he could lie
down there itself
or (ivvul). The
old man was transformed
to Lord Vishnu and
said he be named
Evvulkidantan or
lying in all minds
and all place. Also
called Evvullur
or Tiruvallur. It
is in this place
that Kanakavalli
also known as Vasumati
was married to Lord
Veeraraghava. It
is said that they
were in the form
of a prince and
a princess, who,
when married paid
their visit to the
temple and got merged
with the deity.
There is a sacred
tank here known
as hrittapanasini.
There are a lot
of beautiful sculptures
and paintings adorning
the temple.
Tiruvallur can be
reached by rail
and road. Tiruvallur
has a railway station
which falls on the
Madras - Arakonam
line.
