Tirupporur
is situated near
Chengelpettu. It
is a famous temple
as it one of the
thirty three temples
in tamilnadu dedicated
to the worship of
Lord Muruga.
 This
temple is dedicated
not only to Muruga
but to his father
Lord Siva also.
Siva is worshipped
here as according
to the legend he
was supposed to
have come to this
place and liberated
Lord Vishnu and
goddess Lakshmi
from the curse of
kanva mahirshi.
In this temple Muruga
along with his consorts
Valli and Devayani
was supposed to
have granted protection
to the Devas. Also
it is stated that
Agasthya muni expounded
the meaning of Pranava
from here. There
is a legend pertaining
to the origin of
the temple. Lord
Muruga’s Murti
in the swayambhu
state was buried
under an anthill
which was discovered
by chidambara swamigal,
who built the temple
there. Thenceforth
his decedents took
care of the temple.
The two sacred theerthas,
the saravana poigai
and the valliyar
odai streams across
the southern side
of the temple. There
is also another
theertham known
as the Pranavamritam.
Tirupporur is about
thirty six miles
from Chennai. The
place is accessible
by bus from Chennai.
