Tiruppatiripuliyur
or Tiruppapuliyur
is located in Cuddalore
New Town. It is
a famous place of
worship for the
Saivaites.
The place is considered
very holy and said
that the Ganges
washes her accumulated
sins her. There
is a tank dug out
by Siva himself
called the Sivakarai.
According to legend,
Goddess Parvati
conducted rigorous
penance under the
Pattiri tree here
to get rid of her
sins and be reunited
with Siva. Parvati
had in her jest
closed the three
eyes of Siva, to
ascertain the winner
of the game of chess
that they had been
playing. Due to
the closure of all
the eyes of Siva,
the entire universe
fell into daekness
and gloom. Realizing
this Parvati removed
her hands from Siva’s
eyes and was ready
to do penance to
overcome these sins.
She was advised
to go to all the
1008 abodes of Siva
on Earth and choose
that place where
in she felt a sensation
in her left arm
and left eye. Thus
it is under the
patri tree that
Parvati merged with
the Jyoti of Siva.
The original Patri
tree is dead but
the trunk is still
preserved. It is
copper plated to
protect it.
Cuddalore railway
station exists on
the Villipuram,
Mayapuram route
of Southern railway.
The place is well
connected by rail
and road.
