Tamilnadu Temples - Tirunallar

Sikkal belongs to the Tanjore district, very near Nagapatanam.

There are a lot of stories associated with the temple. Due to a curse Kamadhenu had to descend towards the earth and drained her milk to a tank. She thenceforth took the shape of a tiger. She was redeemed of the curse and got her original form. The sage creates a model of the Siva linga from the milk of the seas. Hence the Linga here is known as Navaneeteswarara - the Siva emanating from cream. People constructed temples around here which is now called the Sikkal. It is believed that Lord Subrahmanya selected this place for penance; It is believed that Lord Subramanian’s body became darker by the day due to a curse. Subrahmanya is said to have got rid of the curse here by dipping into the holy tank. He was given a spear by goddess satyayatakshi. Subrahmania is worshipped here as Singaravelvar.

Sikkal is situated at Tanjore – Nagapattinam branch railway. It is well connected by rail and road.
