 The
Tirumullaivayil
temple is supposed
to have existed
during the past
four yugas and is
said to have been
at least 2000 years
old. The lingam
known as Akalanka
Ratneswara is supposed
to be a swayambhu
and is worshipped
by Devas.
The legend says
that King Tondaiman
was attracted to
the precious beams
of Erukku wood possessed
by his enemies’
kurumban and kantan.
The king marched
ahead o their fortress
but experience a
setback. His elephant
got stuck in a mesh.
The king with his
sword attempted
to get rid of the
mesh but hit a Sivalingam
and blood oozed
from it. The king
was repentant and
prayed for forgiveness.
Siva was pleased
and not only forgave
him but also helped
him procure the
desired beams of
wood by ordering
nandi to assist
in the fight. The
king thus got the
Erukku wood which
has been placed
in the temple. The
Siva lingam is covered
by sandal wood.
Another important
feature of this
temple is the panchamukha
vinayaka- that is
Vinayaka with five
heads and ten hands.
This temple is located
near Avadi which
is 13 miles from
the west of Madras.
The place is easily
accessible by road
from the city.
