Tirukkadaiyur
is famous for the
temple named Amritaghateshwarar.
The place is considered
very holy.
 The
belief is that whoever
visits the temple
can get rid of the
sufferings caused
by Yama which awaits
everyone after death.
The Lord here is
also known as Vilvaneswaram
as it is on this
place that Brahma
sowed the vilvam
seeds and obtained
jnana upadesham
from the Lord. The
legend of the temple
is that when Markhandeya
was about to die,
he clasped the Sivalingam
of Tirukkadaiyur.
But still Yama threw
the noose for catching
hold of Markandeya,
which encircled
the Sivalingam also.
Siva was annoyed
and he killed Yama.
But this upset the
equilibrium of the
earth and hence
Siva was requested
by Vishnu and Brahma
to bring Yama back
into life. Siva
brought Yama back
to life and this
mood is called anugrahamurti.
Siva is also called
Mrityumjaya for
this action. This
temple is thus the
place where the
people pray for
longetevity. The
mark of Markandeya’s
clasp and the rope
of Yama are visible
on the Sivalinga
here and hence is
a great attraction
to devotees. There
are many other stories
associated with
the temple like
that of the devotees
Abhiramabhattar
and Kungulinga Kalayar.
There are three
teerthams, Amrita
Pushkarani, Kala
Teertham and Markandeya
Teertham. There
are many periodical
festivals conducted
here. The temple
is quite rich and
has many properties
attached to it.
Tirukkadaiyur is
a small town. It
has a railway station
which is well connected.
There are bus services
as well to this
temple town.
