Srirangam
is home to the famous
Ranganatha temple.
This is therefore
a famous vaishnavite
center.
It is believed that
Lord Brahma was
perplexed about
the real form of
Lord Ranganatha.
Brahma had seen
a lot of other forms
of Lord Vishnu.
Vishnu asked him
to utter the Ashtakshara
Mantra in deep veneration.
After conducting
a severe penance
Lord Vishnu granted
him his wish and
appeared before
him in the real
swarupam on the
ranga vimanam with
his attendants.
Lord Brahma wanted
to worship the rangavimanam
forever and with
the Lord’s
consent, took him
to Satyaloka. But
he had to part with
the Rangavimanam
to Ikshvaku. The
Ranga vimanam was
later gifted to
Vibheeshana who
wanted to take it
to his country –
Lanka. On his way
he rested the Ranga
Vimanam for pujas.
But the Vimanam
refused to move
from there. It was
later given to the
Chola king, Dharma
Varma. There were
lots of things happening
to the temple. The
temple got utterly
submerged by one
of the floods. It
was later rediscovered
and the temple was
built. Then during
the mogul invasion,
the temple was plundered,
and the idol taken
away. It was later
brought back to
Srirangam. The temple
now is often referred
to as the paradise
on Earth. There
are innumerable
festivals happening
throughout the year.
The temple is beautiful
with its Gopurams
and prakarams. The
temple is wealthy
and has a lot of
property which generates
income.
Srirangam is a small
town and has a railway
station which is
well connected.
The place is accessible
by road as well.
