Shiyali
is a famous Siva
shrine located in
the Tanjore district.
This place is also
known by the names,
Brahmapuram and
Venupuram etc.
It is believed that
when Tirujnana Sambander
was a small child,
his father left
him at the tank
and went for a bath,
The child was hungry
and cried for food.
The Brahmin couldn’t
hear as he was concentrating
on his sprayers.
It is said that
Goddess Parvati
and Lord Siva appeared
before him and the
goddess gave him
milk. It is said
that, this is how
Tirujnana Sambander
got wisdom and started
composing songs.
A lot of Bhaktas
of Lord Siva have
been born here like
Tirunavukkarasu,
Sundaramurthy and
so on. The temple
is quite big and
is located in the
city. The Gopurams
are massive and
very beautiful and
many festivals are
conducted here.
The temple is quite
rich. An elephant
is also maintained
here. The temple
also conducts classes
for popularizing
these songs.
Since Shiyali is
within the city,
it is easily accessible.
