The
Punnainallur temple
is dedicated to
Mariamman. Punnainallur
is located near
Tanjore.
 It
is believed that
when before waging
war with the demon
Tanja. Lord Siva
placed his eight
powers in eight
directions. The
one placed at the
eastern direction
is supposed to be
the presiding deity
here. It is believed
that Mariamman appeared
in the dreams of
the ten ruling king
of Tanjavur, King
Venkoji Maharaj
Chatrapati, and
said that she was
in the forest of
Punna trees. The
king went and found
the idol there and
constructed a temple
here which is known
as Punnainallur
Mariamma. The Gopurams
of the temple have
been renovated by
many kings who ruled
the place from time
to time. Festivals
like the floating
festival and the
Brahmotsav are conducted
every year. Sundays
are considered auspicious.

temple.
