Pullavaneswaram
is the birth place
of Pattinather.
The temple here
is dedicated to
the goddess Soundaryanayaki.
There are many other
idols as well.
There are a lot
of stories attached
to the temple. It
is said that once
Pattinather stood
on one side of the
temple and Nayadiyar
on the other side.
A beggar asked for
some alms from Pattinather
guided the beggar
to go and ask Nayadiyar
as he was a family
man. Nayadiyar had
renounced all his
wealth and he just
had a bowl and a
dog, He gave up
even that and was
able to attain salvation
at Tiruvidamarudur
Another feature
of this place is
that Subrahmanya
has four hands here.
This idol is very
bright and was once
stolen. The robbers
thought that it
was made of gold.
However the ship
in which the idol
was taken began
shaking vigorously
and hence the pirates
threw the idol into
the water. The idol
was later recovered.
The temple is maintained
by the Chettinad
people. There is
a stone construction
near the temple
resembling Indra’s
car.
The temple can be
approached from
Shiyali. It is the
nearest railway
station. Buses also
ply frequently from
Thiruvengadu.
