The
Papanasam is at
the foot of the
mountains from which
the river Tamravarni
flows and touches
the plain. The temple
is known to cure
all sins.
 At
the foot of the
fall, a shrine dedicated
to Agastya is placed.
It is believed that
Lord Siva gave his
darsanam to Agastya
in the south. His
shrine is taken
to the local temple
every year to witness
the marriage of
the local gods and
the goddess. The
chief deity of the
temple is Papavinaseswarar.
There are many stories
associated about
the sins being washed
away for many. Papanasam
is a small village.
Its temple has several
halls and resting
houses. Fish of
all sizes can be
seen in the water
flowing through
the rocks and boulders.
The fish is only
meant to be fed
and not to be captured.
It is said that
if the fish is captured,
then it would prove
dangerous to the
person concerned.
The Papanasam Hydro
Electric Plant has
been built at this
place and has the
upper and the lower
dams. The lower
dam is picturesque
and a nice place
for visitors. Papanasam
can be reached by
bus from Tirunelveli.
