Nagapattinam
is famous for its
Vishnu temple. The
temple has many
legends associated
with it.
As the legend goes
it is said that
a Prince had a daughter
who was beautiful
but was three breasted.
It was said that
the third breast
would go away when
she meets her husband.
One day Nagaraja
was doing a penance
near a tank called
the Sarapushka.
The moment
the princess saw
him, her third breast
disappeared. On
her request to marry
him, Nagaraja said
that he had to please
the Lord with his
penance and only
after that can he
think of marriage.
The princess decided
to join in the penance.
Subsequently the
Lord appeared in
his true form. The
form was so beautiful
that he was called
Soundarara Perumal.
Since this was the
place where Nagaraja
got his blessings,
the place is called
Nagapattinam. This
place is also said
to be the place
where Sage Dhruva
conducted his penance.
This is one of the
108 sacred places
of the Vaishnavites.
The Lord is seen
with his escort
Sundaravalli Tayar.
This is also supposed
to be the place
where the Lord gave
Moksha to Saint
Pundareeka.
Nagapattinam is
a small town and
can be reached by
rail or road. |
