 Mayavaram
is often termed
as the Benares of
the poor of the
South and it lies
between Madras and
Tiruchirapalli.
The famous temple
here is Mayuranatha.
According to legend
this place came
to be known as Mayavaram
due to Parvati’s
rebirth as a pea
hen in one of the
births. According
to the story Parvati
took part in Daksha’s
Yaga without the
consent of Siva.
She later repented
it and jumped into
the fire. A pea
hen had come for
her refuge before
this deed of hers
and she was thinking
of the pea hen while
she jumped into
the fire. Due to
this she was reborn
in this form of
a pea hen in this
place. Thus Mayavaram
or Mayuram. The
lord of the temple
is Mayuranatha.
The sthalavrikham
is the mango tree.
There are three
shrines of Vinayaka,
each with a different
name. There are
many temples here
dedicated to lesser
Gods There are many
holy Teerthams as
well. There is a
Teertham called
the Rishabha Teertham
in accordance with
a legend that states
that Lord Siva was
once annoyed with
the behavior of
Nandi and threw
him into this Teertham.
This temple at mayavaram
is in charge of
Tiruvaduturai Adheenam.
Mayavaram falls
in the railway line
between Chennai
and Tiruchirapalli
and therefore is
well connected by
train. There are
