Madurantakam
is a small town
in Chengalpet district.
The main deities
are Sri Rama, Sita
and Lakshmana.
There are several
legends pertaining
to the arrival of
Sri Ram to Madurantakam.
Its said that the
Brahma Putras attained
salvation in the
hermitage of sage
Vibhandakam by worshipping
Narayana in the
form of Karunakaramurthy.
The hermitage of
sage vibhandaka
was in bakularanyam
which is the present
Madurantakam. It
is said that when
Rama was returning
to Ayodhya with
Sita and Lakshmana,
the vimana wouldn’t
move from this place.
The reason was that
Sage Vibhandakasram
had requested Rama
to pay a visit to
the hermitage while
going to Ayodhya.
Srirama, on being
reminded that by
Sita clasped Sita’s
hands to help her
down the Pushpaka
vimana. This realistic
picture of Hastavalambana
darshana is depicted
in the idol here.
For vaishnavites
a visit to Madurantakam
is important because
the great vaishnavite
saint and philosopher
Ramanujan had his
spiritual birth
here. This is the
only place where
the idol of Hanuman
is not visible as
he did not accompany
them.
Madurantakam can
be reached both
by rail and road.
The temple is situated
just below the famous
Madurantakam agricultural
Reservoir bund.
