As
the name indicates
this structure was
built to honor the
father of the nation,
Mahatma Gandhi.
This has been constructed
by the Government
of India. This structure
stands tall at the
Cape Comorin to
commemorate the
immersion of his
ashes into the sea.
It is a structure
of great architectural
ingenuity.
Gandhi Mandapam
was constructed
on the lines of
the Bhubaneswar
style of architecture.
A big hall or mandapam
has been constructed
at the place where
the ceremonial rites
where performed
before the immersion
and the particular
spot where the ashes
were first kept
is indicated by
the statue of the
Mahatma. There has
been a hole made
at the roof of the
Mandapam in such
a way that on the
2nd of October,
the Sun shines exactly
on the forehead
of the statue to
signify the emergence
of the Light of
Independence by
the selfless efforts
of Bapu. This construction
is a result of great
engineering skill.
The Cape Comorin
can be reached from
Tirunelveli and
Trivandrum railway
stations. There
are buses plying
very frequently
from these stations.
There are a lot
of government and
private hotels there
along with a Government
Traveler’s
Bungalow and Devasthanam
Choultries.
