The
place cheyyur was
known as Jayamkondacholapuram
which is now in
Chengelpettu district.
There is an interesting
story behind the
origin of the
temple. During
the chola rule,
this place used
to be a dense
forest meant for
hunting purposes
of the rulers.
Once when a chola
king came for
hunting, he found
out that there
was another person
already hunting.
The king searched
for him but he
disappeared. In
utter desperation
the king shot
his arrow. The
arrow hit an ant
hill and subsequently
blood came from
it. The king’s
followers dug
out the anthill
to find a Sivalingam.
As the lingam
was found under
an anthill, it
was named Valmikinathar.
A temple was constructed
over the linga.
The consort of
the linga is Muktambikai.
Near this temple
there is a temple
of Subrahmanya
in his infant
stage as well.
Cheyyur falls
in the chengelpettu
district. Buses
ply frequently
from Chennai to
Chengelpettu.
