Chayavanam
is famous for its
Siva temple known
as the temple of
Chayavaneswarar.
It is situated near
the confluence of
the river Kaveri
with the sea.
Pilgrims are required
to finish their
ablutions at this
confluence and then
worship the lord.
It is said to be
very meritorious.
The temple gained
importance due to
the legendary Saivaite
saint Iyarpagai
Nayanar. He was
a man who contributed
generously to sadhus
and fed the poor
and needy. One day
an old man approached
him and asked him
to handover his
wife. Without any
hesitation, the
saint was supposed
to have agreed to
that. It so happened
that the old man
took the form of
Lord Siva. The Lord
had come to test
the Nayanar. The
temple is very famous
and there are a
lot of pilgrims
coming to pay homage
to Siva here.
The temple is
placed near Tiruvengadu
and there are
frequent road
services to Chayavanam.
